How to calculate your BMI (body mass index)
Body mass index is a mathematical equation used to give a rough estimate of whether or not somebody is overweight, underweight, or normal, according to their height and weight. It should be noted that this measure of being ‘fat or not’ is controversial and should only be used as a rough guide. Because it does not take into account a person’s frame, or body build, as well as other factors, it cannot be regarded as a definitive conclusion as to how ‘fat’ you are, let alone how healthy you are. The key weakness is that a BMI does not tell you your percentage of body fat, a much more reliable guide as to your healthy weight.
